INTRODUCTION Serene Koong 龚芝怡 is a Mandarin-English singer, songwriter and producer who has been acclaimed in the music industry with 8 major career awards,at the Global Chinese Golden Chart Awards (3 times), Singapore Hit Awards (3 times), Star Awards 20 and Compass Awards. She was also the mentor on the MediaCorpg singing competition “SPOP Sing!”Her breakout hit “幸福不难”, is one of the most prominent drama series theme songs on television in recent years. With a growing portfolio of hit songs (on TV and film) with accolades to match, Serene who performs in both Mandarin and English, has established herself as one of the rising female Singaporean producer and singer-songwriter artist. Her latest release in 2019 includes “Save Me From Myself”, theme song which she wrote, performed and produced for the Channel 5 drama series “KIN”. ARTISTRY Music has to come from a place within us that is honest and real. These are the qualities that define her artistry, and the same which have attracted a growing fan base for her music in Singapore, Malaysia, Taiwan and China. CAREER HIGHLIGHTS She debut in 2010 with the album “55:38:7” and captured the hearts of listeners with her composition “明知我爱你”, the hit ballad which remains a radio and KTV favourite today. Her r&b release “最好的我” generated a following in Greater China. That year, Serene received 5 nominations and won 2 awards at the Singapore Hit Awards, a feat for a newcomer, next to industry heavy weight Jay Chou with the same number of nominations. In her sophomore release, she sang the emotional ballad《手中线》, theme song for the movie “Love Cuts”, starring Zoe Tay and Kenny Ho, which raised awareness of the emotions of women afflicted with breast cancer. Apart from her original works being featured in television and film, she has also written jingles for F&N and appeared in the brand’s Soft Drinks Television Commercials in the year 2010 and 2011. STEPPING UP AS PRODUCER Her desire to remain authentic as an artist made her delve further into her song writing and music production and she gradually forged an identity in her music which would lead to an important step in her career. In 2013, Serene formed her own music production company GoodGirlMusic and stepped up to the role of producer for the single, “幸福不难” (Happiness is Not Difficult), which would become the multi-award winning theme song for MediaCorp’s blockbuster “The Dream Makers (志在四方)”. THE BIG LEAP TO FILM Most recently, Serene wrote, performed and produced the theme song 心肝 (Precious) for Kelvin Tong's film in the SG 50 Anthology "7 Letters", a film by seven award winning Singaporean film makers (Boo Junfeng, Eric Khoo, K Rajagopal, Jack Neo, Tan Pin Pin, Royston Tan and Kelvin Tong) to celebrate Singapore's Golden Jubilee. Serene joins the company of prolific Singaporean musicians who have had their work featured in "7 Letters", including Golden Horse Award winner Ricky Ho as well as Dick Lee's composition "Bunga Sayang". REGIONAL APPEAL That year, backed by the success of "The Dream Makers" and its theme song (幸福不难), Serene was invited again to work with the sequel to this award winning drama series. "All Alone" (当世界只剩下我一个人) is the sub theme song she has written, performed and produced for this highly anticipated 2015 blockbuster "The Dream Makers 2" which won big at the 2016 Star Awards including "Best Drama Series" as well as "Best Actor" and "Best Actress". The series features prominent female Singaporean artists in its OST. Apart from Serene, it has featured songs performed by Tanya Chua and Kit Chan. "All Alone" debut at NO. 2 on the iTunes Mandopop Chart SG when it was released and held its position for over a month next to Taiwanese artist Hebe Tian's (田馥甄) "小幸运“. The song also charted top 10 in Spotify's Singapore Viral 50 Chart and holds the year to date record for the longest chart history on the "Chinese Golden Charts". SPOP SING! MENTOR 2018 also saw Serene taking on the role of Singing Mentor (歌唱导师) on MediaCorp’s highly televised Singing Competition “SPOP Sing!”, alongside well-known music veterans Billy Koh and Lee Shih Shiong (judges), Nathan Hartono, Joanna Dong and Boon Hui Loo (Ambassadors) and other prominent Singaporean artists and producers in the search for the next homegrown talent. Serene mentored all 20 contestants on the show through three stages of the compeition up to the Grand Finals. A total of 1.7 million viewers tuned in to the competition on Mediacorp’s free-to-air Channel 8 since it first aired on 9 August 2018. Passionate about continuing her mentoring work for new generation musicians, Serene is also one of the featured guest speakers and judge for the nationwide mandarin-pop songwriting festival SG:SW2019 I Write The Songs. WORKING WITH OTHER ARTISTS Artists who have recorded and performed Serene’s works include Valen Hsu 许如云 and Janice Vidal. She has also worked on the post production team for the recent album for Jam Hsiao’s band - LION 狮子合唱团 titled “Replay”. She remains driven by her passion for creating impactful “Made in Singapore” music. NATIONAL AND COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT Serene is actively involved in the community at the national level. She was appointed as the mandarin lead singer for Chingay 2014, as well as the singer for Singapore Tourism Board’s Merlion 40th Anniversary theme song. She has performed at numerous community events including Singapore Children’s Society Gala Dinner (graced by the President of Singapore), Chinatown Lights Up Ceremony (graced by the Prime Minister), and has spoken at NUS as a guest speaker and in schools in support of Speak Mandarin Campaign.
